A thaumatrope is an early animation device that produces an illusion of moving pictures. It was a popular toy during Victorian times. The thaumatrope is a disc or card with a picture on each side that is attached to two pieces of string or elastic band. When the strings are twirled quickly, the two discs spin and the two images blur together to become one.
